Work Based Learning

Work-Based Learning (WBL) connects classroom learning to real-world experience. Through internships, job shadowing, industry projects, mentoring, guest speakers, and career exploration events, students gain hands-on exposure to high-demand careers while developing the professional skills employers value most.

OC Pathways partners with schools and industry leaders to create structured, meaningful work-based learning opportunities that align with career pathways and regional workforce needs. These experiences help students build confidence, clarify career goals, earn credentials or credit where applicable, and strengthen their transition to college, apprenticeship, or employment.

Work-Based Learning transforms career exploration into career preparation.

Orange County Work-Based Learning Continuum

This document outlines the OC Pathways K–16 Collaborative Work-Based Learning Continuum, a comprehensive framework that guides students from self-identity and career awareness through career exploration, preparation, and training.

The continuum illustrates how students progressively engage in experiences such as career events, job shadowing, mentorships, internships, apprenticeships, and industry certifications—each stage building skills, confidence, and real-world readiness. It provides clear definitions, sample student learning outcomes, and examples of aligned activities that support career-connected learning across TK–16 and into the workforce.
